Jean-Philippe Le Villain

Over the Line Studios,
North Ring Road,

Jean–Philippe Le Villain, originally from Brittany in France, moved to Ireland in 2005. He graduated from the Crawford College of Art and Design in 2015 and is one of the founding members and directors of Over the Line Studios.

During this time in college, he specialised in ceramics, a medium that was introduced to him while attending the two years course at Thomastown College of Art, Craft and Design in Co. Kilkenny in 2012. He was also introduced to glass when selected for two months residency in Shanghai University of Art in 2014.

His practice focuses on the elasticity and the strength of the clay, which he stretches to its limit, giving it a fabric-like look. His work represents his philosophical view on what mankind is going through: the conflict between the 'ego' and the 'self'. He primarily smoke fires his work using a technique called saggar firing. This involves wrapping his work in a sealed container and filling it with different materials like sawdust, oxides and seaweed. It is then fired in a gas kiln producing different effects every time.
