Sinead Fagan

Co. Cork

Sinéad is an artist and designer of handbuilt and wheel thrown ceramics. She has studied at the Crawford College of Art and Design in Cork city, and the Grennan Mill in Kilkenny with the Craft Council of Ireland. She is currently based in Baltimore, Co. Cork.

My work is thrown on the wheel and fired using a technique called saggar firing. Each piece is placed inside a clay saggar container, which is filled with combustible items. These give off fumes during the firing giving ranges in colour from pastel grey blues to vivid shades of pink and orange, while preserving the tactile softness of the clay’s surface.

I am interested in the exploration of line and colour and how they interact together creating movement and direction. Uniform areas are divided by bands of contrasting colour and stronger dark lines create horizon like imagery. The firing process allows for an element of unpredictability in the results, due to the reaction of the materials involved. This makes each piece completely individual and unique.

The anticipation and excitement of opening the door of the kiln to see the finished piece emerge, is a constant inspirational and motivating force for me.

All work is for decorative use only and should be kept out of direct sunlight.
